Governance is just a fancy word encompassing all the things we do to organize ourselves, make plans and decisions together, get things done, and resolve conflicts. It also includes the rules and norms that help us establish a common ground and set some basic limits in the community.

Rules of the community

We try to have as few rules as possible. These come out of our experience living together with diverse groups of people, and they have helped us to avoid conflicts and make everything run smoothly in the community.

Roles and responsibilities

Roles and responsibilities are also an important element of the organization of the community.

<aside> 🙍 The role of member of the community includes 3 main basic responsibilities:

• To live according to the principles of the community to the best of his/her ability while being part of it, and to encourage others to do so.
• To follow the rules of the community and to help ensuring that everyone in the community follows them.
• To assume the role house leader on your floor on a rotating basis (explained below) </aside>

Rotating Leadership System

We have recently started this new system to keep the community running smoothly and improve a bit the day to day life of the house. The idea is to share responsibilities in making sure everyone's having a good time and respecting the shared spaces.

Why Are We Doing This?

Our rules and principles come from our experience with many groups over the years, and we have found time and time again that they are the basis for everything else to work in the community. We work hard to explain them properly and make sure they are fulfilled, but we believe every member plays a vital role in creating a welcoming and respectful environment.

How It Works:

Each week, two rooms per floor take on the role of house leaders, and we rotate it in a fair order so everyone gets their turn.

For 1 week, the house leaders are in charge of:

• [ ] Rule Reminder: Keep things running smoothly by reminding Colivers on your floor about the house rules—like keeping down the noise, cleaning dishes, use of dishwasher/washing machine, managing guests, etc.
• [ ] Overseeing Common Areas: Take a quick look around our common areas to make sure everything’s neat and everyone’s doing their part. Also, letting us know in case there’s any maintenance needs, something that needs to be fixed, or suggestions for improvements in the house (more dishes, storage boxes, etc.)
• [ ] Fostering the community principles: Lead by example in following the community values, and play an active role in helping new members feel at home (introducing them to other members, helping them settle in, etc.).
